Scam Email using Liliane Bettencourt’s name

The following email has been reported to us.  The scam email is an advance fee fraud, also known as a “419″ scam, and is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

In this version of the scam, the fraudsters are using Liliane Bettencourt’s name.

Liliane Bettencourt is one of the worlds richest women, the biggest shareholder in L’Oréal and one of biggest individual shareholder in Nestle.

Protect yourself from these letter frauds

  • The first question to ask yourself is “why me?” This person doesn’t know you and has no reason to trust you. The best way to deal with an e-mail like this is to delete it straight away.
  • Governments and large corporations do not transfer money through another person’s bank account. Any suggestion that they do so is a reliable indication that you have been approached by fraudsters.
  • Letters and documents sent by fraudsters are usually badly written. Look out for spelling mistakes and poor grammar.
  • If a deal seems to be too good to be true, then it probably is.
  • Beware of being told you must act quickly or you’ll miss out on this ‘one-time deal’.
  • Never send your bank or personal details. If you have done, contact your bank immediately to stop money being withdrawn and sent overseas.
  • Never send any money.
  • Never, under any circumstances, travel anywhere in response to one of these scams. You won’t see your money again, and you could put yourself in physical danger.

I received something very similar same day same first sender but the liliane beettencourt was a outlook address.
    Dear Friend,

I appreciate you for writing back as I have expected. I got your email from a web journal and felt strongly to write to you. As I earlier introduced myself, I am Liliane Bettencourt, daughter of the late Louise Madeleine Berthe. I am a French Citizen, 91 years old, and worth $30.5 Billion Dollars. You can also confirm from: http://www.forbes.com/profile/liliane-bettencourt

I have attached my photograph in this e-mail for you to know me more.

The intention of this email is to be of immense blessing to people. With my age, I cannot continue to amass wealth without giving out. I might not have the liberty of time due to my ailment (Dementia), therefore, I am doing this now.
I have handed all my wealth to my only daughter, but there is part of it which nobody is aware of. I have been putting it away for this purpose since a long time now. I would be happy to cede it out to you. I would have done this myself but for my health reason and if I do it through my daughter, I am very certain she will not help anyone with it. She took me to court the last time I gave out money out of generosity. It is my hope that you are able to receive this money and help others from it too.

10% of my worth I have been putting away in a private deposit for a long time now and it has reached an amount of $30,500,000.00. I am trying to cede this money in portions through the bank I deposited it to as many as can benefit from it because I do not really have much to do with it. As I send this message to you, I am also sending to others too. I sent to churches, Orphanages, and individuals, 10% to you and others each to whom I have contact with already.

Now, all this being said, if you know you are ready to receive the funds $3,500,000.00 (Three Million, Five Hundred Thousand United State Dollars). Kindly introduce yourself in details to me:

Mine was pretty similar but I spotted spelling errors like “intrested” rather than “interested” and down the bottom on the email disclaimer conditions it was in English and Turkish which was a dead giveaway. I deleted the email straight afterward but this is what it said:

    24/7 Online Service

    PARIS, FRANCE

    Attn:

We have received your email message and we have also received the confirmation letter and your information from your benefactor. We have also received a confirmation of go ahead from MRS LILIANE BETTENCOURT: In this regards, we are mandated to transfer asset ownership rights to you immediately. Under professional banking ethics, in order for you to gain access to the mentioned asset and make full claim, there are two standard official procedures inter-optional to receive the money asset of this portfolio. Please read the below following information carefully.

    1. A UNIVERSAL ATM CARD would be generated/activated to accommodate the entire fund worth THREE MILLION, FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS for easy access to the funds from any ATM MACHINE IN YOUR LOCALITY.

    2. Since you do not have a running BNP Paribas account to support the transfer of the asset, you will be required to activate an online transfer account and self-make the transfer of the fund online to your local bank account.

Would you prefer the Universal ATM Card or Ownership of a BNP Paribas Viva online account?

The Following are requirement for either option.

    OPTION 1 (ATM CARD)
The Universal ATM Card is accessible in all ATM machines all over the world and it is easy and convenient to use, just like your local bank ATM card. To opt for this option, kindly indicate your interest and send us your full details to generate the card. Details required is your full name (As would be used on the card), your address (where the card would be delivered to).
As soon as we receive these details from you, we will imprint your name and personalize the card to you alone. Thereafter, our affiliated delivery service firm will make a direct delivery to you. Meanwhile, you are expected to pre-pay for the Insurance on delivery because the BNP Paribas will not be responsible for the insurance. Mrs. Liliane Bettencourt did not cater for delivery Insurance either. According to standard policy, delivery cannot be undertaken without insurance. Our duty is to generate the UNIVERSAL ATM CARD, and we have this done and printed as soon as you furnish us with the required information. Our delivery service firm will deliver your ATM CARD to you untouched, in one sum of US$3,500,000.00. Only send us your details to mail the package to you.

Cost of Card – €1,210 EUR
    Delivery Insurance – €110 EUR

OPTION 2 (NEW ACCOUNT ACTIVATION) Recommended
With this option, to move the funds from our bank to you, you must activate an online transfer account with us. We will open the account in your name, and do an electronic crediting of the amount of US$3,500,000.00 into the new account. We will send you the details of the account (URL, account login and pin, account number etc). By this, you can make transfer of the fund electronically from any computer in the world to your local bank account. Each transfer takes 2-3 days to be finalized and credited to your local account.
    Account Activation Opening Balance

    (1)Silver Account (Capacity – US$50,000 – US$1,500,000 / Month) Opening Balance- €299 EUR –
    $411.00 USD

    (2)Gold Account (Capacity – US$200,000 – US$1,800,000 / Month) Opening Balance- €499 EUR- $688.00 USD

    (3)Platinum Account (Capacity – US$2,500,000 – US$10,000,000 / Month) Opening Balance- €799 EUR- $1,100.00 USD

    *Nondeductible Act
There is a nondeductible seal mandate on the asset funds as authenticated by Mrs. Bettencourt. By this mandate, we cannot deduct any amount whatsoever from the specified asset of $3,500,000.00. For this reason, you are officially required to fund your choice account open balance or ATM Card from off the asset capital.

We sincerely hope the above information is helpful to you. Kindly make your choice from the above information and inform us with details to proceed. If you have any questions and for further clarification(s), write us. Or call Client Services at 1 42 98- 12- 34. We’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

ruza.mlac@telemach.net This is another email they are using to scam people I feel sorry that these people use good names to try and fraud others out of there hard working money.

  35. susie says:

I also, received an e-mail saying that they were Lillian Bettencourt@ff.gg and that she was giving me some money because she wants to help those that are in financial trouble etc. and all she asks is that I share the money with another needy organization or person(s) so that it will go around helping others etc. I too wish this was a real letter from her and that the money is really being given to me but I know in my heart that it is just another fraud/scam. I have already had my measely bank account compromised by these fraud/scam artists and even lost my home because they put me in debt so deep that I’ll never get stable again. A hard lesson to learn for trusting and believing others.

  36. vee says:

I have just received this email today. This is so sad!

  37. You Don't Need My Money Dude - I do!!! says:

This is so rediculous. Such an invasion of privacy and trust. Please continue to post your experiences, as this web cite helped me to determine it was in fact “way way too good to be true”. Interesting that none of the phone numbers work, and when they call you back, it’s a man with a Nigerian accent that you can hardly understand. Obviously, as soon as the next step required me to pay any amount of money, even a dollar, I would know that they were full of it. The amount promised to me was $8.2 Million dollars, and there is no way that anyone would be required to pay money to recieve that amount of money…is there not enough to cover the fees in that massive amount of money??? I know better, and should have “Googled” the scam before I ever responded. The sad thing is, I would have actually set up the charity foundation in her name to honor my word.

  38. Robert says:

All the way up North of 60, 200 Miles North of Churchill Manitoba, 1334 Miles North of Winnipeg Manitoba. After many months later, I see that I get same email in Month of November. I google searched Liliane Bettencourt, sure enough she is a billionaire, making easy to believe donation of $3.5 million is a REAL donation! Especially when I need funding for house fuel now that winter is here, whereas our temperature is now reaching -63 windchill. When our house runs out of fuel, we use our oven and hair dryer to heat our rooms. Told them it would be nice to finally be able to afford $18.89 2 kg of Minute Rice, $19.78 2 kg of juice and $12.49 4 litres of milk!! and would be nice to fill up our fuel tank for the winter so we won’t run out of fuel and have to use oven and hair dryer for heat in the house~~~ First google search about lilianebetten312@rogers.com did not do much help, but then I saw this page and an very VERY glad to have seen ALL these messages from ALL over!! I just wish this page was a LOT easier for others all over the world to see!! since first google searches were nothing much but THIS site page was VERY useful to see!!! Thanks to ALL who posted out their concerns as well!! Robert

  39. mary says:

thanks for the warning . I just recieved one and it would be nice to have the extra money for the holidays and mostley that dirty word (bills).

  40. Mike says:

Getting these type of scams all the time….I should be the richest man in the world by now LOL! All the top companies names are used….including top events such as the Olympics.

You need to ask yourself…..’why me?’.

Dead giveaways: ‘bad English.’ Addressed to ‘recipients’ Email address generally @gmail.com or yahoo.com or some such easily obtainable and untraceable address. If it was genuine, why not the email address of the company that they are supposed to be representing!!!?

Don’t reply….just delete and don’t open any attachments.

I had recieved an email from this outlook address the only thing that was in the email was the subject line which stated, ” I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET A HOLD OF YOU”, and that was it. Seeing that it was an outlook address (I find this typical of scam mail) naturally I investigated it before I decide to reply, to find that it was of course yet another scam mail.

They are still sending this scam- my was a donation from Tina M.Cooey. The new e-mail you are supposed to respond to is LilianeBettencourt@yeah.net. I only was offered 2,000,000.00. lol And then there is a disclosure at the end from the State of Florida…when I googled Tina- she is in Pensacola and Mrs. Bettencourt’s FaceBook page had an article saying her kids are in charge of her estate….So of course I then saw this page and decided I should let you all know the latest. Thanks
