Lying landscaper pleads guilty in court

A rogue trader, who was caught in the act whilst completing gardening work, has pleaded guilty to consumer protection offences today for giving a false business details and lying about stated qualifications.

Joseph Dewing, 53 , of Trimley St Martin and his company Premier Landscapes pleaded guilty to 10 charges under consumer protection regulations.

This charge follows an investigation by Trading Standards after a complaint from Suffolk Police last year about the activities of a doorstep trader on Victoria Road, Felixstowe.

Trading Standards found that flyers that had been supplied to various houses in Felixstowe, which stated Premier Landscape as having a local business phone number, which was in fact a public call box.  The leaflets also showed that the company employed “fully qualified tradesmen in all aspects of landscaping and brickwork designs” when the trader did not hold any related qualifications.

Dewing was finally caught in September last year, when Trading Standards responded to a rapid response call whilst the trader was at the home of an elderly resident in Coronation Drive, Felixstowe. Dewing had been paid upfront for landscaping work and had dug over the homeowner’s garden; throwing the garden rubbish over the fence on to a public field.

Councillor Colin Spence cabinet member for public protection said:

“People should be vigilant about any trader who approaches them about carrying out repair or maintenance work on their home or garden. Often rogue traders are opportunists and will target vulnerable and  elderly people.”

“If anyone is concerned about being approached by a rogue trader they should contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 040506. When seeking a reliable trader, talk to family, friends and neighbours to get recommendations or look for a Trader via, whose local members are vetted by Suffolk Trading Standards”

Residents of Victoria Road in Felixstowe played an integral part in this investigation helping with Trading Standards enquiries.  A No Cold Calling Zone has now been created in that road.
