Rogue Father and Son duo Sentenced

Two rogue traders who preyed on older customers in Suffolk and Essex have been sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court.

Thomas Doran, 39 of Clacton Road, Weeley, Clacton-on Sea, along with his son Myles Doran, 18, pleaded guilty, when they appeared in court earlier this year, to ten charges including using aggressive practices and demanding upfront cash payments from victims.

This follows an investigation by Suffolk Trading Standards who received a complaint about the activities of a doorstep trader on a road in central Ipswich.

Both men, working under the business name of Clacton Reinforced Paving, performed works on driveways for older people in Suffolk and Essex and would often start work before the end of the seven-day cancellation period. If a customer asked the Doran’s to delay the start of their works, they would demand cash payments and on one occasion took the customer to the bank to withdraw cash.

Other charges included using a trade body approval badge from the Guild of Master Craftsmen (GoMC) to make claims about guarantees and qualified workers, when they weren’t members.

Thomas Doran was sentenced to 16 months in concurrent jail sentences, suspended for two years, and banned from being a company director for seven years.  Orders for compensation and costs were postponed pending the outcome of proceedings involving HM Revenue and Customs.

Myles Doran was sentenced to a community order of 18 months with 18 months supervision, and 80 hours of unpaid work.

Costs of approximately £9,000 were ordered to be paid within two years.

Colin Spence, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for public protection said:

“These men were preying on elderly and vulnerable victims and I am pleased that they have been sentenced today accordingly. Trading Standards have been a driving force to secure this conviction and identified 10 customers who had been visited in Suffolk and a further 12 in Essex.

“If approached by a doorstep trader, always check their identity and look up their organisation to make sure that they are genuine.  If you do need a reliable trader, talk to family, friends and neighbours to get recommendations, or look for a Trader via Checkatrade, whose local members are vetted by Suffolk Trading Standards.”
