Suffolk rogue roofer jailed

Rogue trader, Bill Simpson, 57, of Hazels Lane, Hinton, Saxmundham has been sentenced in Ipswich Crown Court to 21 months in prison, and is to pay £3000 in costs, £80 to compensate the victim, and a victim surcharge of £100.

This case came to light after a Suffolk Trading Standards investigation was carried out following a rapid response request by Suffolk Police, who had arrested Simpson at the victim’s address in Lowestoft in 2014, where he had undertaken roof repairs without permission.

On sentencing, the Judge, Mr Recorder Seely commented:

“It was extremely aggravating that the offence had been committed against such an elderly couple. Despite the fact that the previous conviction concerned a victim in her 70’s, and the value of the fraud was higher, the current offence was as bad, if not worse, due to the age of the victims. People in the later years of their life should expect to be protected, and therefore due to the seriousness, only a custodial sentence can be considered.”

Steve Greenfield, Suffolk County Council’s Head of Trading Standards said:

“Mr Simpson has been given a significant custodial sentence that reflects the emotional impact doorstep crime can have on vulnerable victims, and this is with thanks to the effective partnership between Suffolk Trading Standards and Suffolk Constabulary”

“Simpson has previously been punished by the courts for similar rogue trader activity, again concerning an elderly victim and seeking to exploit them for financial gain. His recent behaviour of fraudulent and misleading claims demonstrates that he had not learnt his lesson. This sentence should serve as a warning to traders that may be thinking of taking advantage of consumers. Suffolk Trading Standards will find you and you will be punished for your crimes.”

“If anyone is concerned that a rogue trader may be at their door they should immediately call the Police or Trading Standards. They can also obtain advice on their consumer rights from the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506.”
