Beware: Doorstep chainsaw sellers hit Suffolk

A warning from Trading Standards and the Police has been issued today after several reports of traders selling chainsaws door to door in Suffolk.

Doorstep callers may claim that their items are genuine and safe, but officers are warning residents not to part with their money, as the products may not have had any safety checks performed on them or come with any instruction manuals or advice.

Anyone who has been offered goods door to door is advised to consider the following:

  • Who are you buying from? Do they have paperwork? Are they legitimate?
  • Think twice before you buy and if you are made to feel under pressure to make a purchase, have the confidence to say no
  • Talk to someone you trust for a second opinion

If you spend more than £42 with a trader on the doorstep, you have 14 days in which to cancel. The trader should give a notice detailing these rights. If no such cancellation notice is given then an offence may have been committed.

Officers are currently trying to track down the original source of some of the chainsaws being sold, and are warning potential consumers to stick to trusted suppliers and known outlets.

If residents have any concerns about products they have purchased on their doorstep, advice is on hand from Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506. Vital information can then be passed on to Trading Standards to help stop rogue traders and work towards creating a Rogue Free Suffolk.

Anybody who has any information on doorstep traders operating in their area can call Trading Standards on 03454 040506 or to the Police on 101.
