SCAM Warning surrounding VAT registration numbers

Businesses in Suffolk are being warned about a scam that is currently doing the rounds – in addition to other areas throughout the UK.

A vigilant Suffolk Business has reported to Suffolk Trading Standards a headed document from ‘UK – DATA CONTROL Business & Commerce’, specifically regarding ‘Missing information about VAT Registration Numbers’.

The apparent reason for the letter is to update VAT registration numbers. However, it’s only when you delve into detail by reading the small print that it asks for a fee of £790 per year for a three year inclusion on the UK Data Portal.

Although the letter looks official, the information requested does not have to be provided to the company and entries do not have to appear on the company’s website or portal.

Businesses should be aware that they are under no obligation to provide them with any information or payment.

Should your business have already returned the letter, it’s recommended that you contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 for further advice.
